5 Tips For Adjusting Your Pet To Back To School Season

Back-to-school season is upon us, and with it comes the inevitable changes in schedule and routine for many parents. The sudden changes can be hard on your dog and may cause him to become anxious or stressed. To alleviate some of these symptoms, it's important that you take steps to help your dog adjust to the new schedule and routine.

Here are five tips to help your pets adjust to the changing season.

1. Plan Ahead And Get Them On Your New Schedule In Advance

Take your time changing your pet's schedule. A sudden change in routine can be stressful for them and may even trigger separation anxiety. Instead, slowly introduce the new schedule long before it goes into effect, so they have time to get used to it.

Start getting up earlier and get your pet used to new feeding times. Also, implement early morning bathroom breaks, and simulate your morning routine of getting ready for school or work. When you gradually change your pet's schedule over a week or two, he will have time to get used to your new schedule once the back-to-school season starts.

2. Avoid Dramatic Departures And Arrivals

Pets are a lot smarter than we give them credit. We often think that showering them with kisses and hugs and making a big deal when we leave will comfort them…but it actually doesn't.

In contrast, this type of behavior is bad for your pet and may cause them to become anxious and fearful because they will associate your actions with abandonment.

If a dramatic departure becomes an everyday occurrence, the pet may become even more anxious with each similar experience. Calmly saying goodbye to your pet when you leave can help reduce their anxiety about being left behind.

3. Make The Most Of Your Mornings And Afternoons

If your pet does not get enough exercise, it may become bored. Bored pets can cause a lot of trouble—they often chew things they shouldn't or make messes in the house out of boredom. The best way to avoid this is by ensuring that you always provide your pet with enough time for play and daily physical activity.

Walk your dog for 30 minutes more daily, or go to a nearby park with him. Play with them before and after work for 15-20 minutes to keep them from becoming bored.

4. Keep Them Busy While You Are Away From Home

Mental stimulation is just as crucial for your pet's mental health and happiness as physical exercise. Without it, pets can develop bad habits, fear, and anxiety.

Interactive toys are a great way to keep your pet mentally stimulated throughout the day and do not require human presence to be effective. Interactive toys are designed to encourage your pet to play independently, which can help keep them occupied and happy.

5. Doggie Daycare

If your dog gets stressed out when you're away from home, consider taking him to doggy daycare. It will give him some much-needed socialization with other animals and a chance to play with toys and run around. The staff at doggie daycare are trained to deal with separation anxiety and can help your dog through the back-to-school season.
